California lawmakers have passed a sweeping set of bills aimed at regulating the artificial intelligence industry, combating deepfakes, and protecting workers from exploitation as the technology rapidly evolves. California leads the nation in AI regulation The Democrat-controlled California legislature, in its final week of the session, approved hundreds of bills that will now head to Governor Gavin Newsom's desk. The deadline for the governor to act is Saturday. Newsom, a Democrat, has until September 30 to sign the proposals into law, veto them, or let them take effect without his signature. While he indicated in July that he would sign a bill to combat deepfakes in elections, he has not commented on the other measures. Earlier this summer, he cautioned that overregulating the industry at home could harm it. In recent years, he has often cited the state's budget woes as a reason for rejecting legislation he might otherwise support. Here's a look at some of the AI bills ...

Artificial intelligence regulations versus innovation
As the European Union (EU) takes strides to regulate artificial intelligence (AI), concerns arise about stifling innovation and the potential for government misuse. While the EU's AI Act gains traction, across the Atlantic, the US Congress also aims to join the regulatory bandwagon, showcasing their own unique approach to control the uncontrollable. Inspired by the EU's endeavors, the US Congress, known for its ability to grapple with complex issues, contemplates its own AI regulation strategy. The prospect of bipartisan collaboration in crafting legislation is both awe-inspiring and mildly amusing. After all, what better way to address the complexities of AI than through the harmonious voices of political rivals? The EU's risk-based approach has sparked interest among US lawmakers who are eager to embark on a similar path. They believe that by prioritizing areas of potential harm, such as critical infrastructure and public services, they can safeguard the futu...

AI - Governing the Unknown and Making Mischief
As we delve into the peculiar world of artificial intelligence (AI). Let's highlight the exciting challenges that AI brings to our society and the solutions that could save the day. Need for Speed? More Like Need for Banana Peels! Picture this: policymakers scrambling to catch up with AI development, but their efforts are as futile as chasing a greased pig. As it turns out, technology moves faster than a cat on a hot tin roof, leaving them in a comical state of disarray. We might as well hand them a bunch of banana peels and watch them slip and slide through their futile attempts to regulate AI. #AIChaos #TechFasterThanPolicymakers #SlipperyRegulations #ChasingBananaPeels #FutileAttempts The Art of Unpredictability: A Rollercoaster Ride AI is the wild child of technology, and even those creating it don't have a clue where it's headed. It's like giving a mischievous monkey a box of surprises and letting it loose in a theme park. No matter how well-intentioned the r...

From the Stone Age to Artificial Intelligence: Unveiling the Realm of Disinformation
New opportunities for distorting the truth and spreading disinformation have evolved throughout human history, starting from the Stone Age. While artificial intelligence represents the latest avenue for such practices, it is by no means the first. Deception and falsehoods have been a part of human communication since the emergence of language, which may date back tens of thousands or even millions of years. Although there is no tangible evidence of Stone Age cave paintings depicting dishonesty, the ability to speak undoubtedly facilitated occasional deceit. Trust me on this—after all, do you think I'm lying? The advent of writing introduced a new medium for manipulating reality. Whether the hieroglyphics found in Egyptian tombs conveyed an accurate historical account of a pharaoh's reign or served as a testament to their perceived greatness is open to interpretation. With ink, pen, and paper, a broader range of individuals, often driven by religious mot...

Robot takeover? Nah, we've got a different kind of AI drama
Forget about those sci-fi robot takeovers. The real AI doomsday scenario is more like a slow-motion disaster movie that leaves society in shambles. No explosions, just a slow and painful deterioration of everything we hold dear. The real AI doomsday scenario is more like a slow-motion disaster movie that leaves society in shambles. Jessica Newman, director of the University of California Berkeley's Artificial Intelligence Security Initiative, puts it simply: "It's not about AI turning evil or developing a desire for world domination. The real danger lies in humans programming AI to do harmful things or unwittingly integrating faulty AI systems into every aspect of our lives." But hey, don't stop worrying just yet. While the chances of AI wiping out humanity are slim, there are plenty of other ways it can mess things up. Picture a world overrun by fake news, where misinformation spreads like wildfire. Yeah, that's one of the delightful side effects of powerful ...

New AI law: Europe abolishes progress!
The EU, known for its penchant for smothering innovation, has found a new toy: artificial intelligence. And how could it be otherwise, they want to immediately strangle it with their over-regulating hands. The latest AI regulation with the sonorous name "Artificial Intelligence Act" could mean the end for ChatGPT in Europe. What a pity! The EU also has a problem with AI systems ChatGPT, the superstar of the AI world, has created a real hype about artificial intelligence. But of course the EU sees things differently. She would like to evaluate the various AI systems according to their risk and, depending on the classification, introduce bans and obligations. Yes, you heard that right, bans! The EU wants to ban AI systems with unacceptable risk because they could allegedly endanger people. As if we humans weren't capable of taking care of ourselves. And it gets even better. The EU also has a problem with AI systems that all...

UK Government Fails to Protect Workers from AI-Based Discrimination, Says TUC
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has accused the UK government of failing to protect workers from the potential discrimination that could be caused by the widespread use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The TUC has warned that AI could be used to make decisions about how people are managed, recruited, and dismissed, which could lead to greater discrimination at work. Despite this warning, the government has not introduced the necessary guardrails to stop the exploitation of workers, according to Kate Bell, assistant general secretary at the TUC. UK Government Speaking ahead of the TUC's AI conference, Bell said that AI is already being used across the economy to line-manage and hire and fire staff. However, without clear and enforceable protections, this could lead to widespread discrimination and unfair treatment at work. Despite the warnings from the TUC, the UK government has issued vague and flimsy commitments instead of clear and enforceable protections. Regulator...
